Introduction
Neck pain ranks as the fourth most prevalent category of musculoskeletal complaints. This type of pain can significantly impact a patient’s daily activities, quality of life, and participation in social or work-related roles.
This course discusses the current “state of the art” in relation to neck and shoulder pain, including diagnostics, physiotherapeutic and manual therapy interventions, and the process of clinical reasoning. The course also covers the natural versus abnormal progression of neck pain, highlighting prognostic factors for delayed recovery.
The aim is to update participants’ knowledge and skills in treating neck and shoulder pain to help patients more effectively.
Content
The training consists of 2 sessions covering the following topics:
- Epidemiology of neck and shoulder pain
- Pathophysiology of neck and shoulder pain
- Natural and abnormal progression of neck and shoulder pain
- Red flags in neck and shoulder pain
- Performing and interpreting functional assessments for neck and shoulder pain
- Performing and interpreting the Spurling test (upper quadrant)
- Performing and interpreting nerve tension tests through peripheral nerves
- Indications for movement therapy, mobilizations/manipulations for neck pain
- Evidence-based practice concerning neck and shoulder pain
- Manual therapeutic skills for treatment
- KNGF guideline for Neck Pain, evidence statement for subacromial complaints
- Case studies and clinical reasoning
Target Audience
Physiotherapists and Cesar-Mensendieck exercise therapists
Objective
After completing the training, participants will have a solid understanding of the knowledge required in physiotherapy concerning neck and shoulder pain, with a specific focus on pathophysiology, diagnostics, and treatment, as well as clinical skills for evaluating neuromuscular dysfunctions in patients with neck and/or shoulder pain.
